Hugo Spritz Cocktail Recipe

When I’m not drinking wine, I’m usually drinking some sort of Prosecco spritz…Aperol Spritz, Hugo Spritz, truly anything with “spritz” in the name.

If you’ve been to Europe, you’ve probably seen plenty of Aperol Spritz glasses dotting patio tables right around happy hour (or aperitivo).

Truth is, I had no idea what these bright orange drinks in wine glasses were the first time I visited Italy, but I saw them everywhere!

It took a while for me to get accustomed to the bitter taste, but now I’m in love and can’t ever turn back. Now, I always have Aperol on hand when I’m looking to spritz up my day.

Btw, here’s my easy Aperol Spritz recipe in case you’re craving one now.

On our second stint in Europe a couple of years ago, my friends and I discovered our new favorite spritz: The Hugo Spritz.

In addition to plentiful orange drinks during aperitivo, we were also noticing these new greenish, spritz-style drinks. We asked our hotel bartender in Slovenia, and he made us our first ever Hugo Spritz cocktails.

This drink spruces up Prosecco with some elderflower, lime, and mint to make a perfectly refreshing harmony.

I’m a sucker for anything with elderflower, so I was pretty much hooked from the get-go.

The Hugo Spritz is the less well-known of European spritzes, so I want to share this recipe with you in hopes that you’ll fall in love with this drink like I did.

And for those of you who don’t love Aperol, maybe this is your new go-to cocktail for happy hour!

Hugo Spritz Cocktail Recipe

The Hugo Spritz is light, refreshing, and floral, making it the perfect pick-me-up for spring and summer.

I love to use Prosecco for spritzes because the flavor is mild enough to showcase the other ingredients in the drink. Also, the bubbles are not overwhelming, but just bright enough to spritz up any cocktail.

Hugo Spritz Ingredients (makes 1):

5 oz Prosecco

1 oz St. Germain (or any other elderflower liqueur)

Splash of soda water

A few mint leaves

1 slice of lime

Directions:

Fill a large wine glass with ice and pour in Prosecco and St. Germain.

Top with a splash of soda water and give it a quick stir.

Garnish with a few mint leaves and a slice of lime.

Take it out to the patio and enjoy!
